Gum disease is the most common disease in the United States, affecting almost 80 percent of the population. Known as periodontal disease, periodontitis (advanced), and gingivitis (mild), it is an infection of the gums and bone that support the teeth.

Symptoms are mild at the beginning and include red and tender gums and bleeding when brushing teeth. If left untreated, gum disease may progress to such issues as receding gums, tooth loss, and bone deterioration. It may also contribute to an increased risk for heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.

One way to help treat gum disease is with a scaling and root planing procedure. Scaling is the careful cleaning of the roots of your teeth. Root planing is when the roots are smoothed out so that it’s more difficult for bacteria to reattach to them.

If we determine that you would benefit from a scaling and root planing procedure, we will plan your treatment. It may take more than one appointment for us to complete the procedure.

Other ways to treat gum disease include antibiotic therapy, surgery, and laser treatment. During laser treatment, a precise diode laser is utilized to remove and reduce periodontal infection.
