When your provider discusses and details your plan for maintaining a healthy, beautiful smile, it is always structured with regular examinations and cleanings in mind. The reason for this is to be able to manage any minor dental concerns and to prevent larger issues from occurring. In fact, it is recommended you visit your dentist at least once every six months so as to minimize the chances of developing an oral concern that may have been easier to address had action been taken sooner.
During your visit, your dentist will carefully examine your mouth for any signs of concern, such as chips, cracks, cavities, and decay. They will also be on the lookout for signs of periodontal disease and other dental issues that could threaten the integrity of your smile.
Not only does your checkup consist of searching for and addressing cosmetic and functional issues that arise from oral structures, but it also includes a thorough examination of diseases and developments such as oral cancer. During this process, Dr. Richardson will look for any signs such as sores, rough spots, lumps, red or white patches, and other abnormalities that may form on the gums, lips, tongue, or throat. If caught early enough, the probability of successful treatment is much higher than if it is caught in later stages, which is why it is imperative you attend routine appointments.
During your visit, your dentist will also check on the development of plaque and tartar. Plaque develops when harmful oral bacteria cling to your teeth, and if permitted to grow, can calcify and form tartar that can be difficult to remove. Once allowed to progress, plaque can spread to the roots of a tooth below the gum line and even cause complications such as gum disease, requiring a deep cleaning with scaling and root planing to remove. Attending your bi-annual checkup not only prevents the need for extensive and intensive treatment but leaves your grin feeling and looking much healthier.
